Jazz North East present…
Velvet Revolution + Eun-Jung Kim / Charlie Collins / Derek Saw / Faye MacCalman
Daniel Erdmann (tenor sax) / Théo Ceccaldi (violin) / Jim Hart (vibes) // Charlie Collins (percussion) / Eun-Jung Kim (komungo) / Faye MacCalman (reeds) / Derek Saw (trumpet & flugelhorn)
When we first became aware of Velvet Revolution it seemed like a dream team. Saxophonist Daniel Erdmann, on our wish list for ages . . .violinist Théo Ceccaldi, who was sensational at our ‘Paris-sur-Tyne’ event. . . and Jim Hart, who spearheaded the UK’s vibes revival. What potential! Then we heard them . . . and the potential was more than fulfilled. This is music of compact melodic statements, narratives opening to free flowing discussion between the artists, each short piece a jewel that’s peppered with surprises and irrepressible musicality. In it’s quiet way it’s revolutionary, yet with the warmth and smoothness of the finest velvet.
But before the revolution begins, we start with a set from drummer Charlie Collins and Eun-Jung Kim, a leading exponent of the komungo, or Korean long-board zither. And then, for a second set, brass player Derek Saw and Tyneside reeds player Faye MacCalman join in for a brand new grouping that’s rich with possibilities. So, three great sets . . . love live the permanent revolution!
