Newcastle Improv Festival – a rough guide

Saturday 27th July 2019 to Sunday 4th August 2019

We know many of you want to know what, when and where things are happening, so here is a placeholder for now – to give you a rough idea. Each individual event will be published on here as soon as it’s ready to go!

Sat 27th to Sunday 28th July – NiF Launch weekend in Ouseburn
Improvised comedy, theatre and musical shows and workshops by the Suggestibles and special artists for adults and families at The Cumberland Arms and Seven Stories.

Tues 30th July to Sunday 4th August –NiF main week in Newcastle
Our festival hub is Alphabetti Theatre, and the majority of performances will be there, featuring local guest artists and visiting artists from the Southeast, N. Ireland and Scotland, with many free early evening activities as and late-night improv jams to watch or participate in.

Daytime taster workshops in improv comedy, hip-hop culture, laughter yoga, game-play, music and contact-improv dance, for young people, children, families and adults will mainly be at The Stand Comedy Club, with additional events at Jurys Inn and Seven Stories.

Thus far… NiF guest performing and teaching artists include The Suggestibles, Pippa Evans, Dragprov, Bad Taste Cru, Liz Pavey, Jason Perez & Couch, Open Heart Theatre, Spontaneous Wrecks, Beccy Owen, Jenni Winter, Suki Webster, Gary Kitching, Niall Ashdown, and Stella Duffy OBE (our festival patron). The Suggestibles’ School of Improv Imps will be presenting Rat Race improv tournament and Archenders the intriguing on-going soap opera.

We are planning several day-time improv masterclasses, one of which will be led by Pippa Evans on Sun 28th July at The Cumberland, and two by Jason Perez on the afternoons of Thurs 1st and Fri 2nd Aug at Alphabetti. A full-day Improv for Writers workshop led by Stella Duffy is on Sat 3rd Aug at Jurys Inn, and that evening Stella will be hosting our Panel Q&A on Improv at Alphabetti.

Tues 30th is Draprov night (you’ll want to dress up!) and Fri 2nd is urban take-over night (you’ll want to dress hip!)

Sunday 4th Aug is creative media day and closing event, the 4 Hour Festival Challenge.
