“I fell totally into that thing Vic Godard said ‘We Oppose All Rock And Roll’, avoid all
these clichés” Lawrence, Felt (Mojo Magazine, May 2012)
“Whenever Godard adopted a style it became a genre and when it became a genre… he
did something else” (The Daily Telegraph, London)
Vic Godard is a vocalist, Subway Sect frontman, songwriter and former postman.
Formed at the suggestion of Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, Vic Godard and his
Subway Sect have been long-term staples on the post-punk scene since 1976. A
resurgence of interest in his work has seen him find fans with, amongst others, Marc
Riley on BBC 6Music, who has booked Vic and the Sect for several live radio sessions.
2014 saw the release of an impressive double album career retrospective ’30 Odd
Years’, covering an eclectic range of material, from punk to ska to cabaret/music hall
and jazz. 31st March 2019 (Mother’s Day) marks the release of a new album, ‘Mums’
Revenge’, available on vinyl on Vic’s Gnu Inc label.
Now with the additional ‘Club Left’ line up of The Subway Sect featuring onetime
Bernard Rhodes protégé Johnny Britton, Rob Marche, Sean McLusky and Chris Bostock
(aka The JoBoxers in a previous life), Vic and the Sect make a welcome return to
Newcastle. No stranger to The Cumberland Arms, Vic and the Sect’s 8th th ‘Children of
Godard’ night promises to be as memorable as previous years; as always, celebrating
the influenced and influences of “the greatest living Englishman”, Vic Godard.

Born and raised in Wylam, Northumberland, Helen McCookerybook was the bass

Horns in the 1980s; both favourites of BBC Radio 1’s John Peel. After a break to raise a
family, she returned to the stage as a solo artist with a new set of songs, and since then
has toured the UK regularly, releasing four solo albums.
Helen has recorded with artists such as Gina Birch, Vic Godard, Lester Square and
Martin Stephenson. Her 2017 solo album, ‘The Sea’ received airplay from BBC6’s
Gideon Coe, and her duet with Vic, Francoise Hardy’s ‘Rendezvous D’Automne’ was
regularly played by Marc Riley last year and available to download from Vic’s Gnu Inc
label. She recently self-released her ode to The Monochrome Set, ‘Saturday Night With
The London Set’.
